Sherlock is Depressed

Seeds by thesardine, 5 k, teen. In a fit of boredom Sherlock plants some seeds, may or may not eat one cracker, and definitely waxes dramatic on the sofa for a while.

An Unexpected Error Has Occurred by funeralshenanigans, 2 k, teen. Sherlock has a breakdown, and John is there to be an anchor in the storm.

Upper Matecumbe Key by mazarin221b, 719 words, teen. Sherlock struggles to find his own peace, set against the backdrop of the Florida Keys.

On Pins and Needles series by jbaillier & 7PercentSolution, 2 works, mature-explicit. His immune system is decimating his nervous system - a civil war raging inside of him. Is there a reaction he’s supposed to be having to this news, now? Something normal: cry, scream, pound the wall? Shake his fist at the uncaring universe?

Observe, Control, Delete by Chryse, 9 k, mature. Sherlock wakes up in hospital, again. It’s a slow road to recovery, and flashbacks of life-long issues stand as hurdles. John helps. He always does.

Four Corners of the Western World series by pennypaperbrain,  5 works, teen to explicit. Sherlock contacts John while he is “dead” asking him to join him as he works to remove the last of Moriarty’s network. Amidst drama and intrigue, Sherlock fights against himself with John’s help.

The Rest of the Way by aceofhearts61, 1 k, teen. Sherlock’s having a bad episode of depression. John is there for him.

(Beyond) The Science of Horizons by thetreesgrowodd, 11 k, mature. In the downtime after a disastrous case, Sherlock is depressed and John is ailing. That’s when Sherlock discovers an amazing new ability that manifests when he strokes John’s skin. Whether or not it’s all in his head is insignificant.

A Satellite Out of Orbit by SilentAuror, 6 k, mature. For years, Ella has been trying to get John Watson to open up and talk to her about his issues. To her surprise, his longtime flatmate Sherlock Holmes turns up one day, needing her advice.

A River Without Banks by Chryse, 203 k, explicit. This story is worlds within worlds. Sherlock uses a time traveling device to go back into his past, rejoining his consciousness to that era to redo key points in his life. Over and over, Sherlock tries to find the change that will defeat Moriarty once and for all. This fic is amazing, it seems to encompass every Johnlock story you’ve ever read and rolled it all in to one big connected ball.  There are warnings for rape, and torture, but eventual happy ending.

The Mind Has Mountains by Kate_Lear, 3 k, mature. When first encountering Sherlock’s ‘black moods’ then John was entirely unprepared, army training be damned. John struggles to deal with Sherlock’s tantrums. Hands in his hair definitely helps. Depression.

Chiaroscuro by Social_Hemophilia, 7 k, teen.  “His crashes are getting longer,” John states quietly. Mycroft is silent. After a minute of quiet contemplation, he asks, “How long?” “Latest one is going on about a month now. Longest one he’s had since I met him.”  There is a pause.“He has bipolar disorder, doesn't he? The symptoms all are there, these aren't just bouts of crippling boredom, are they?"

Breakable by MissDavis, 117 k, explicit. After John is seriously injured, Sherlock struggles to figure out how to help him, keep himself sane, and maybe, just maybe, get their life back to the way it's supposed to be.

days like this by thosewhowant, 2 k, teen. Some days, when Sherlock is feeling down, he can’t help but wonder why John does all this. With him.  (Depression.)

EXTRA

Dead Letter Office by a_different_equation, 20 k, mature. People like him, like them, did not feature in most of the stories he was told when John was Johnny in Ireland. Back then, in the youth, in the army, when he returned to London, John was only good at surviving, so he lived and learnt.  The most important lesson was what he learned in the Dead Letter Office: you can tell your own story. You can author your own life. There is no script to stick to, which is fucking terrifying.

I can add:

Chiaroscuro - http://archiveofourown.org/works/1562696

Lead - http://archiveofourown.org/works/360371

Counting Backwards - http://archiveofourown.org/works/5259038

Willow Ward - http://archiveofourown.org/works/393209

All of them are relatively short, but there’s a lot of different takes on depression. What I do wish for (on my own wish list) would be atypical depression, Sherlock or John style.

One of my favourite fics is this ancient, short and beautiful kinkmeme fill, Hell in a Greek Myth.
